Geoffrey Garland to perform at 'Twilight Toasts'

Geoffrey Garland has been playing guitar for more than two decades, but admits he's more comfortable as a picker than a performer.

A California native who enrolled at the University of Georgia in 1993 to study guitar under the iconic John Sutherland, Garland only recently has brought his classical leanings to the public, although primarily in venues where he's not in the spotlight.

"I never really desired or aspired to have a career in music," says Garland, who wound up earning a degree in geography and geographic information systems from UGA in 1998. "I am not a natural performer and I've always wrestled with that idea that if you're a player, you need to get out and play."

While Sutherland helped Garland develop the physical tools to skillfully play the guitar, the veteran instructor - who still works with Garland on occasion - also has shared his outlook on the performance aspect of music.

"John said that music is a cycle and that (the performer) is an important part of the link," Garland says. "Until you put your creative spark into a tangible form, music or any art won't reach its next phase, which is connecting with people. I've enjoyed music so much that I've spent hours alone playing, and I'm now thinking that there's a good chance other people might enjoy it, too. ... The work will not reach fulfillment until there's a reaction to it."

Garland - who by day works for the Information Technical Outreach Service at UGA's Carl Vinson Institute of Government - has thus far restricted most of his dates to weddings (and one funeral), but he recently reached out to area assisted-living and retirement centers for brief recitals, something that he has greatly enjoyed.
